Snoop Dogg is at the center of another culture war controversy, having come down hard on LGBTQ+ representation in children’s media. The rapper and hip-hop veteran targeted Pixar’s recent feature film Lightyear for a comment he made during an interview that has since gone viral.
As the host of It’s Giving with Sarah Fontenot podcast explained last week, Snoop was discussing a recent trip he took with his grandson to watch Lightyear. In the clip, the rapper states that he was unaware that the Toy Story spinoff included an element of a same-sex couple and noted that he had to improvise when his grandson asked him a question about how two women could have a child together.
“I’m scared to go to the movies. Like y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for,” he continued.
Lightyear did not immediately respond to the Daily Dot’s request for comment.
The film in question was a spinoff to Pixar’s Toy Story series and focuses on the backstory of Buzz Lightyear as a real space-age explorer who created the toy Buzz Lightyear that is central to the Toy Story film series. In one scene, two women kiss, with the Pixar production later tweeting a “Happy Pride” tweet celebrating the moment. After conservative criticism, the scene was removed entirely from the film, only to be added back later after Pixar workers criticized the decision and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups raised objections.
In other remarks, Snoop Dogg stated that his grandson had to ask him, “Papa Snoop, how she has a baby with a woman? She a woman?” during the scene. “Oh s—, I didn’t come in for this s—. I just came to watch the g—— movie,” the rapper is heard saying.
Lightyear and Pixar Have Faced Pressure Over LGBTQ+ Inclusion in the Past
To date, the film has grossed over $226 million at the worldwide box office against a much-hyped launch. Some blamed the failure on Disney’s decision to release the film to streaming, while others stated that the film suffered from a lack of distinctive presence outside of its shared universe with the Toy Story films. The rapper states that he was unaware that the Toy Story spinoff included an element of a same-sex couple and noted that he had to improvise when his grandson asked him a question about how two women could have a child together.
Snoop Dogg’s comments on the subject have ruffled feathers, especially as the musician is set to perform for the Australian Football League’s Grand Final later this year. In a report from PinkNews, AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan noted that Snoop Dogg would remain on the performance roster for the sporting event. “The AFL Grand Final, it’s not a political event. It’s about celebrating our game, and our clubs and the communities that make it so special and, you know, entertainers,” McLachlan said. “Snoop Dogg will be performing, we are expecting.”
The backlash to Snoop Dogg’s comments is the latest in a long-running controversy over the nature of children’s films and media. At times, conservatives have taken issue with basic elements of modern life being included, such as showrunner Greg Berlanti noting that networks have received backlash for storylines around things like trans representation, in which parents cannot “talk about playgrounds where kids get gender confused.” Others, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), have been supporters of the Inclusion Rider, a pledge for actors and other creatives to only work in projects that reflect the diversity of the real world in the cast and crew members.
