Pike Faces New Challenges in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Paramount+ has released the official trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The upcoming third season of the live-action Star Trek series is set to premiere on Thursday, July 17, 2025. This marks the first trailer since April, when the streamer released a teaser trailer for season 3.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 ended on a cliffhanger with a bloody battle against the Gorn. The Enterprise was on a mission to a Federation colony world when it was invaded by the warlike species. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and other members of the crew were captured and taken hostage, along with other survivors.
The stage is now set for Season 3 to pick up directly from where the second season left off, with another bloody confrontation between the Enterprise and the Gorn. The newest trailer for the upcoming season starts with some action, and a briefing from Pike in which he orders his first officer, Spock (Ethan Peck), to launch an attack on an enemy ship. The ship comes from the Gorn, but there will be a new enemy that the crew of the Enterprise will be facing in the new season.
Paramount+ published footage during New York City Comic-Con in October last year, but a trailer was yet to come until now. In the trailer that was shared on April 24, it picks up right after season 2, and we have Pike taking the Enterprise on a combat mission. The new trailer also features one of the hallmarks of this Star Trek live-action series, a large-scale space battle.
The season 3 trailer shows the beginning of the final conflict against the Gorn and the Enterprise crew finding new adversaries and fresh adventures. Season 3 will resolve the Gorn threat while also introducing new adversaries that will challenge their allegiance, bravery, and strength. There will be more expansion of episodic storytelling as Strange New Worlds will have a wide variety of stories, with season 3 promising to focus more on religion, service, love, comedy, and more. Episodes in the upcoming season will also have some different genre storytelling than has been seen in the Star Trek franchise previously.
The trailer is also the first to show the returning main and recurring cast for season 3, including the new character Dr. Roger Korby. The new addition to the cast is Cillian O’ Sullivan, who will play as Star Trek legacy character Dr. Roger Korby. Korby was first played by Michael Strong in the original Star Trek series. In the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds timeline, Korby is a noted archaeologist and an expert in medical archaeology. He is also the long-lost fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), so there will be some friction because Chapel has a romantic partner in Spock (Ethan Peck).
The season will also feature Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, who will both make guest appearances as characters who are not part of the main cast. As shown in the April teaser trailer, the season will feature more comedic antics aside from the space adventures and action-filled storylines. The official trailer is also living up to the genre blending, which will be in this next season, as it also features some softer character-driven moments between the Enterprise crew, some flirtations, as well as some humor, and some more humor in an explosion of a volatile science experiment.
In the preview, James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) also has an extended moment in the captain’s chair. It is not clear how Kirk will be involved with events in the upcoming season, but he will be allowed to lead and command. This is something of a test of his character and potential. He will be a young man leading a ship and its crew into dangerous and unexplored territory. Pike imparts some sage wisdom and guidance for Kirk in this moment, noting, “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”
The preview also ends with a comedic beat, one of the only real ones in the clip. Spock, while introducing a Vulcan way of greeting as a “high five” to Oswalt’s Vulcan, goes from a successful first attempt to a complete “too slow” to the lower extremity. The confused Vulcan asks Spock, “Why would you do that?” Spock simply responds, “Because you are too slow.”
