Foundation Season 3 Trailer Teases Intergalactic Chaos
Apple TV+ just dropped a trailer for the new season of Foundation, its big-budget, epic sci-fi adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s popular science fiction series of the same name. The new trailer promises a galaxy on the edge of collapse, a new crisis with unthinkable stakes, and the arrival of one of Asimov’s most mysterious and dangerous villains: The Mule. Foundation season 3 will premiere on July 11, 2025, with new episodes released every week through September 12.
Spoilers for season 2 of Apple TV+’s Foundation are below.
Foundation season 1 ended with a time jump of 138 years. Season 2 saw our heroes through the Second Crisis, which had as one of its major events a near-war between the Foundation and the ruling Galactic Empire. The Foundation itself became far more radical in this time, politicizing and weaponizing religion in its drive to extend its influence. The season also introduced the “Mentalics,” a secret colony of psionic humans with extreme mental powers.
Season 3 has the further distinction of being 152 years in the future from the events of the last season. It also situates its story within a major stage of Asimov’s original series, which is known as the Third Crisis. In a brief official synopsis, Apple TV+ notes that the Foundation is far more established and powerful than it used to be, while the once-powerful Cleonic Dynasty is already past its prime. The two powers, under both internal and external pressures, are at a point where they must temporarily band together to save civilization as they know it. But the dark horse that threatens to destroy everything is the arrival of The Mule, an actual warlord who has unparalleled access to resources and even more disturbing power over the human mind.
The trailer picks up this thread with Hari Seldon’s voiceover: “Centuries ago, when we predicted the fall of the galaxy, the Foundation was created to save humanity. But the coming darkness was always the turning point.” We see Gaal Dornick next, who has been steadily working her way up the ranks since she first appeared as a main character. “We’re out of time,” she says.
The Mule, played by Pilou Asbæk, is a figure unlike anything we’ve seen in Foundation so far. He has what he calls a “science” that allows him to weaponize human emotion and reshape minds to his purpose. “I can turn enemies into allies. Hate into love,” he states calmly. “It only takes a little nudge.” The trailer also contains explosions, battle scenes, and cities falling from the sky. The action is intense and showcases The Mule’s influence and power.
Season 3 of Foundation brings back regulars, including Lee Pace, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann, who star in the season as the three imperial clones Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk, respectively. Jared Harris and Hari Seldon are back as well as are Lou Llobell as Gaal Dornick and Laura Birn as Eto Demerzel.
The third season of Foundation also significantly expands the cast. New faces include Alexander Siddig as Dr. Ebling Mis, an ardent devotee of Hari Seldon and a self-proclaimed “psychohistorian;” Troy Kotsur as Preem Palver, a leader of a planet of psychic humans; and Cherry Jones as Foundation ambassador Quent. Other additions to the cast include Brandon P. Bell as Han Pritcher, Synnøve Karlsen as Bayta Mallow, Cody Fern as Toran Mallow, Tómas Lemarquis as the flamboyant Magnifico Giganticus, Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing as Song, and Leo Bill as Mayor Indbur.
Foundation and the battle for psychohistory
Foundation as a series has always centered around Asimov’s concept of “psychohistory” — the fictional science of using mathematical models and sociological factors to predict the broad trends of history. This next season also seems like it might throw that idea into question. The Mule’s abilities upset both predictions based on logic and the assumptions about human emotional reactions. The fight for the galaxy might no longer be about influencing or controlling outcomes — it might now be a matter of survival.
The trailer is also notably big on visuals. The series returns with space vistas, dramatic designs for its many civilizations, and an eye for action and spectacle. But it also underlines a sense of the emotional. What is at stake is more than just the galaxy; it is its long-term future. The looming question is whether the Empire and the Foundation can band together. Can psychohistory even survive the Mule’s assault on human reasoning? And is there any future for the galaxy that isn’t an absolute disaster?
Season 3 looks ready to grapple with these questions, though on an even more global scale with higher stakes, more layered characters, and complex world-building. Season 3 of Foundation will premiere on July 11, with new episodes coming out every week until September 12. And for fans of both speculative fiction and big-budget science fiction TV shows, there is much to look forward to.
Season 3 of Foundation appears to be the test case for whether Seldon’s plan was resilient enough to handle the impossible. The Mule’s arrival isn’t only a threat to the galaxy’s peace but also the very idea that the future can be predicted at all.
