Main characters unite in Invasion Season 3 for a deadly mission

It’s likely that if you didn’t catch Invasion when it premiered last year, you were preoccupied with two other sci-fi juggernauts that Apple TV+ has been busy putting out in 2024. If you managed to check out Invasion last year, or you’re a genre fan who has been eyeing the series with interest, it’s time to take another look, because the third season’s trailer has arrived, and the show seems to be reaching new heights.

It’s difficult to claim that Invasion, the David Weil (Hunters) and Simon Kinberg-created sci-fi epic about an alien invasion of Earth, has underwhelmed to this point, since it has managed to build a cult following despite getting more mixed reviews (particularly earlier on in its run) for being slow to unfold in Season 1, even if fans of the series have often acknowledged the love/hate relationship it can cause.

But even early detractors can’t deny that Invasion has one of the more compelling casts among recent sci-fi shows, impressive and eye-catching cinematography, and an attempt at daring and often unconventional themes, though at times, muddled execution has left the series falling short of some of its potential.

The new trailer has just dropped, and it is looking to set a new tone that suggests the series is ready to truly hit its stride.

Creator Credits Include an Oscar-Nominated Screenwriter and Multiple X-Men Movies

Much like many recent forays into the sci-fi genre, Invasion has at its heart a very familiar concept. The high-concept premise involves an alien invasion on Earth, which in Invasion’s case is told through a relatively small group of characters who find themselves in various locations all over the world, in the roles of regular civilians caught in a larger-than-life struggle. Invasion weaves together English, Japanese, and Pashto, three very different languages, to reflect the many places where the story takes place.

What may make Invasion more interesting is its creators’ track records. Creator David Weil made his name with the Apple TV+ series Hunters, which had a much narrower focus, following a group of Nazi hunters in the 1970s, yet also managed to rise to the level of a fan favorite with striking action scenes and a narrative that tackled social issues of the era (like anti-Semitism).

Creator Simon Kinberg is a far more high-profile writer-producer, perhaps best known for his various contributions to the X-Men film franchise, as well as The Martian, the critically and commercially successful 2015 sci-fi drama that was nominated for several Oscars. With that kind of pedigree, there’s hope that Invasion can find new footing, and the trailer gives every indication that it may be able to do just that.

Invasion Season 1 Took Its Time, but Season 2 Delivered More Action and Stakes

The initial portion of Season 1 of Invasion was perhaps even more protracted than the entire first season because it frontloaded a sense of what is at stake. Its aliens were prominent, though often in the background, as the bulk of the drama focused on the interpersonal and emotional stories of the cast. Viewers who came in for the alien drama and explosion-laden spectacle didn’t always find it there, but those familiar with Weil and Kinberg’s backgrounds saw a setup for a more grounded sci-fi story.

Season 1 concluded with the realization that the alien invasion was inescapable and the full attack from the extraterrestrial beings, who were, up until that point, subplots or narrative devices to illuminate the trials of the human characters. Season 2, though, picked up the pace and dialed up the action, and as such, the stakes were made more dramatic for the characters, since their world had already changed so drastically in a year. Season 2 dealt with the changed world and how the characters and people who survived were coping with how the world had been made unrecognizable.

Earth has been pushed to near apocalyptic conditions, with much of the population forced to live in small, walled safe zones, and the normal parameters of life are often no longer even an option as everyone struggles to survive. The threat of being eaten by the alien creatures remains high, and dramatic tension is constant.

Whether the series can now live up to expectations or earn new viewers remains to be seen, but Season 3 of Invasion looks set to be a series that not only reaches its potential, but also shows what it could have been in previous seasons if the balance had been struck.

Season 3 of Invasion will premiere August 22, 2025, on Apple TV+.
