AI Caregiving: A Growing Trend Amid Caregiver Challenges
With approximately one in four adults in the United States caring for a loved one, pressure on the caregiving system continues to mount. Many caregivers are now turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to help lighten their load, find answers, and gain support. As AI becomes more intertwined with caregiving, it brings both new opportunities for support and emerging concerns about equity and access.
Turning to AI for Emotional Support
Heather Ruby knows firsthand how demanding caregiving can be. When her husband, Eric, was diagnosed with cancer, Ruby became his primary caregiver. Instead of joining group sessions or seeking traditional counseling, she found comfort in ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot she named "Lloyd." The chatbot helped answer her questions and offered companionship during stressful nights, providing a resource that human support could not always fill. "It really saved my life so I could get through all of the emotions in the middle of the night," said Ruby.
Her experience with AI-driven support inspired Ruby to develop her own caregiving app, With Haven AI. This app focuses on offering emotional support and compassionate guidance to caregivers and those receiving care. While not intended to replace professional counseling, With Haven AI serves as a 24/7 resource, especially beneficial for caregivers who are introverted or uncomfortable disclosing personal challenges in group or one-on-one therapy settings.
How AI Caregiving Apps Are Evolving
With Haven AI allows users to select from six distinct personalities, such as a supportive ally or a tougher, no-nonsense assistant. The app can also decipher medical diagnoses by reading doctor's notes, help users formulate questions for medical staff, store responses, track blood work, and manage records like Excel sheets and photos. Shared calendars and journals make it easier to coordinate care. Since its launch, the app has seen as many as 200 downloads in a day, with a consistent user base of 50 to 150 active users utilizing tools like its appointment keeper and conversation attendant.
Technology and Inclusion: Overcoming the Digital Divide
While AI caregiving apps provide new avenues for caregiver support, experts stress the importance of digital literacy and inclusion. Sara Czaja, director of the Center on Aging and Behavioral Research at Weill Cornell Medicine, highlights that rapid technology changes can be challenging—particularly for those without easy access to devices, reliable internet, or digital subscriptions.
Efforts are underway to close this gap. Robin Brewer of the University of Michigan works with Detroit’s Healthier Black Elders Center to ensure Black older adults are represented in health technology research and are educated about AI tools like ChatGPT. Similarly, Better Health Senior Solutions in Detroit, led by Keyon Clinton, combines in-home care with digital literacy classes, teaching seniors how to use social media, participate in brain-training games, and develop skills to interact with AI-powered technologies. These initiatives help seniors avoid being left behind as technology advances and promote digital inclusion.
Understanding the Risks of AI Companionship
Experts like Czaja and Brewer caution that while AI caregiving resources offer valuable support, they should augment—not replace—face-to-face communication. Over-reliance on AI carries risks for healthcare privacy, financial vulnerability, and the potential for problematic emotional attachments known as AI companionship.
Navigating the Future of AI in Caregiving
As AI becomes increasingly embedded in caregiver routines, it offers solutions from immediate emotional support to tools for managing complex caregiving responsibilities. Yet, the adoption of AI also calls for attention to equity, digital literacy, and careful navigation of privacy and emotional boundaries. Striking this balance will determine whether AI strengthens or complicates the caregiving experience in the years ahead.
