Lakeshore Keepers to Begin Key Restoration Efforts

Lakeshore Keepers are set to start restoration work this fall at the historic Big Sable Point Lighthouse, located along the shore of Lake Michigan. These efforts precede a major restoration planned for 2027, with the fall 2026 phase focusing on essential structural repairs.

Focus on Chimney and North Porch Restoration

The upcoming restoration will address two primary areas of concern: chimney repairs and restoration of the north porch foundation wall. Northern Restoration & Waterproof Systems Inc. has been selected to handle the project. According to Lakeshore Keepers, the work is expected to be completed within about a week of commencement.

Jack Greve, Executive Director of Lakeshore Keepers, highlighted Northern Restoration’s previous experience at other lighthouses in the state, including Tawas Point Lighthouse, as a key factor in awarding them the contract. "This fall project will support the $450,000 Big Sable restoration project planned for 2027 by allowing the north porch to serve as an access point for guests visiting the lighthouse next season," Greve said. "With this work, we will now be able to guide the traffic flow safely in and out of Big Sable."

Visitor Access and Operating Schedule Remain Unchanged

The fall restoration efforts will not disrupt the current operating schedule of Big Sable Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse will continue to welcome visitors Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the end of its season. The lighthouse is set to close for the season on October 25 and is expected to reopen on May 4, 2027.

Looking Ahead: Major Restoration for 160th Anniversary

This fall’s maintenance sets the stage for a larger, comprehensive restoration project scheduled for 2027, estimated at $450,000. Planned work includes the removal of paint from the Keepers’ Quarters, replacing worn bricks, masonry repointing, and repainting the building. Plans are also in place to repair the cladded tower, ensuring long-term preservation of this historic lighthouse.

The timing of the restoration aligns with the 160th anniversary of Big Sable Point Lighthouse’s presence on the Lake Michigan shoreline. Completed in 1867, the lighthouse is recognized as an important regional landmark and a popular destination for visitors.

Lakeshore Keepers' Commitment to Preservation

Greve emphasized the organization's dedication to lighthouse maintenance and preservation. "Preserving Big Sable is a significant undertaking, and these projects are part of our long-term commitment to maintaining the lighthouse for future generations," Greve stated. "We are excited to begin this work now and continue that momentum into Big Sable’s 160th anniversary year."

Lakeshore Keepers remain focused on ensuring the accessibility and longevity of Big Sable Point Lighthouse and its associated structures for both present and future visitors.
