Girl Scout Juliettes Take Action for Literacy
The Manistee Onekama Girl Scout Juliettes recently demonstrated their commitment to community improvement by installing three little free libraries at various sites in Manistee. This initiative aims to promote literacy and make books more accessible to children and families in the area.
Who Are the Girl Scout Juliettes?
The Girl Scout Juliettes are individual members of the Girl Scouts who collaborate on projects without being part of a traditional troop. For this community project, members Savannah Rodriguez, Carter Jerome, Aubree Lyman, Mila Bond, and Cora Henderson played key roles in organizing, fundraising, and carrying out the installation of the libraries.
Locations of the Little Free Libraries
The libraries are now available at three locations in the community: Manistee Elementary School, Manistee Early Childhood Center, and CASMAN Academy. These sites were chosen to help reach a broad range of students and families, promoting ongoing access to books and reading materials throughout the year.
Funding and Community Support
To turn their vision into reality, the Juliettes raised funds through community support, including proceeds from the sale of cookies and other items. Little River Casino Resort also played a vital role by helping to sponsor the project and providing additional funding. The group issued a statement expressing their gratitude: “The group of Juliettes would like to extend our sincerest appreciation for the friends, family, and community members who support Girl Scout learning, events and projects such as this with their purchases of cookies as well as other items throughout the year. Additionally, thank you to Little River Casino Resort for helping sponsor this project, providing funds toward the purchase of these libraries.”
Impact on Book Access and Literacy
This "take action" project was designed to address the root cause of limited book access in the community, aiming for a lasting and sustainable impact. By installing and stocking the free libraries, the Juliettes are helping remove barriers to reading and learning for students at Manistee schools and CASMAN Academy. The project highlights the importance of community involvement in literacy promotion and supporting educational opportunities for local youth.
Future Opportunities for Community Engagement
The impact of these free libraries will continue as community members and students are encouraged to use them and contribute books. The Girl Scout Juliettes’ project serves as an example of how grassroots initiatives can create positive change and foster a love for reading in the community.
